This photo was taken in near darkness of a pair of mushrooms on a log overhanging a small stream. I worked for an hour in the mud and water with flash units in different locations trying to get the mushrooms to glow. I didn't quite make what I wanted. Deep in brown bear country in the brush along streams wandering around in the dark never seemed prudent, so I finally just left it with what I had and used this photo and a couple of others in the gallery.

This is an HDR photo without a lot of tone mapping. The object was to get into the shadows of the gears and get as much depth into the machinery as possible. This is a set of gears on what appears to be a crane; vintage WWII.

One of my many attempts to glorify the mushroom and make it appear somewhat magical in its natural environment. This photo was taken in near complete darkness. The other similar photos were all taken at roughly the same time as darkness was creeping in rapidly well after sunset.

This bear is about 600 pounds. This photo was actually taken from about 75 yards or more on a very brightly lit day.

The Siren of the Bunker, and the Tally Ho bar. Notice the wood burning barrel stove in the back, the rough cut benches, homemade barstools, sturdy bar............ I am not sure when this was used last, but it appeared someone had been living in there some time back. Most likely a few years earlier. The appearance of the whole place was just strange. This is an old abandoned WWII bunker with almost no ambient light. The burst of light from the flash units had the effect of calming the whole scene somewhat.

Alaska Brown Bear.

This photo was taken from quite a distance with the bird in the top of the tree. I was experimenting with a new lens, handheld. The bird and berries worked pretty well together. This is a Varied Thrush.

This is a stump along a trail that I spotted. It looked like something the bad neighbors living next to the Keebler Elves might own.

F/V Brat in the Channel Near Sitka in the fog.

This is Beaver Lake outside of Sitka (Baranof Island). This shot was taken in early December after the first good snowfall or two had already taken place. The lake is frozen. This is an exposure blend of four photographs. The pre-sunset look of the light angle is more representative of the fact that the sun just stays at a low angle this time of year. Southeast never gets completely dark like it does near and above the Arctic Circle, but sunset is around 3:30PM in the first week of December. Daylight hours are much shorter. Mid-summer, sunset will be after 11PM.

This is an old camp site of a couple that lived in a plywood and visquene "palace" off a more secluded area of the Indian River drainage country. I knew the couple because of my profession. They lived there winter, spring, summer, and fall. I have no idea what has happened to them now.

This is an old float house on Middle Island in the Sitka area. Float houses are not uncommon in Alaska's coastal waters.

This is a blended exposure.

Chickadee in flight through the pine branches. This photo was done with minimal processing in photoshop. I converted it to a jpeg. It was an accidental photo. The Chickadee took off just before the shutter released and the camera was on an Auto ISO setting in Shutter Priority on a very overcast wet day. It just seemed to work as a fluid photo with the quality of a watercolor almost.

These small purple mushrooms look almost obscene, but they are the only variety I have found so far with this vivid color variation. They fade somewhat as they open completely up. Their cap spreads to a sombrero and the gills are darker in color. The whole mushroom loses some of the brilliant purple for a lighter shade when mature.

I am colorblind in the red/green spectrum, so if the colors are off, its because what I see is not quite what you see. I am sure I am entertaining when it comes to matching socks too.

You Have Entered The Tidal Zone : The tidal zones of Alaska have a very rich and varied amount of life in them. There are more plants and animals in this small band along the shoreline per square foot then any other part of the ecosystem that I have been able to observe. I am not a biologist by any means, but one visit to a tidal zone and you can see it for yourself. Alaska's rocky shorelines are perfect for a diverse population of creatures and plants. You can spend hours checking things out and hunting for different species. This gallery is meant to just give a taste of what is really there. My recommendation is to walk the shoreline at low tide and see for yourself. I can't explain it well enough to really do it justice.
